Gold Coast Suns in AFL SuperCoach

Gold Coast Suns are the new team in AFL for 2011. Bringing the number of teams to 17.

Gold Coast will be comprised of many young, relatively unknown players. With a bunch of recycled players thrown in. Along with Karmichael Hunt, an NRL convert.

In terms of SuperCoach, Gold Coast will offer many rewards. The ability to pick undervalued AFL players from the Suns will be a financial boon for SuperCoaches.

We are also lucky in that the Suns have a first round bye. This allows SuperCoaches to delay the introduction of any/all Gold Coast players to their team.

Karmichael Hunt would be an immediate selection to the Defender's bench, under normal circumstances. He will most likely play every match, injury & fitness dictating. I have no qualms about the man's ability. Full-back, the position he played in league, is most suited to an AFL transition. His general kicking & marking skills are unquestioned. It will be 'footballer's brain' that will be under doubt. I see this as something easily gained through experience. Things such as reading the play; a 360 degree perception; and quality use of the football.

The 'God' of Supercoach - Gary Ablett - is under an injury cloud. In addition to this, it is unclear how he will deal with the inevitable extra pressure/tagging. He no longer has a fleet of silky midfielders surrounding him.

David Swallow has a huge wrap on him. Chances are he will play all season, injury allowing. He could be the one Gold Coast Sun to be an automatic pick prior to the season.

For simplicity, SuperCoach AFL will take the view that Gold Coast Suns can be drafted into SuperCoach teams prior to Round 4. Enjoy the first few rounds as a 'scouting mission', perusing the talent available at Gold Coast.
