Best Rookie Defenders/Backs (Stats are from the NAB Cup)
Waters $151k West Coast 3gms, 68 avg
Looks set for a whole season as small forward. May start slowly, but for a pick this cheap - so what? Value in spades. Seasoned AFL player.
Maguire $114k Brisbane 2gms, 70 avg
Captain Brown has declared, "Goose would be a definite, I'd say." Thanks Johnno, that's all we SCers were waiting to hear.
The 3rd pick
A bit tougher. The Tigers look to have the main options.
Nason $94k Richmond 3gms, 33 avg
Have only seen 5 minutes of the guy before he hurt his knee. That he is called a midfielder is enough for me.
At this stage, my pick for #3.
Webberley $94k Richmond 2gms, 30 avg
Could nab a defensive spot for a large part of the year. May not. A tiger defender at this price is irresistible.
Farmer $160k Richmond 4gms, 46 avg
Has started the pre-season slow, score-wise. Tipped to show something after his move from Port Adelaide. Could end up a better pick than Waters, but I'll be playing safe.
Schmidt $100k Adelaide 4gms, 40 avg
Tipped for the spare backline spot in round 1. Difficulty in picking him for SuperCoach. Should be tough competition within the team. Possibility to be in and out of team. Other rookie contender, Davis, lower on list.
Best Rookie forwards
Rockliff $109k Brisbane 3gms, 97 avg
In everyone's team. The easiest pick available. Won't spend nearly as much time on the ball. Has shown he can stand up if required.
Hitchcock $103k Port Adelaide 4gms, 61 avg
A skinny, quick kid. Not likely to play the season out. Should be a good cash cow. Am concerned about having Banner & Hitchcock in the one team.
Pick 3 - Still deciding
Richmond again offers options. Roberts & Taylor. Not tempted yet. Peterson from the Hawks could be worth the money. I'll pick him at this stage. To be confirmed by team lineup/rookie elevation.
Peterson $100k Hawthorn 3gms, 60 avg
Can play midfield. A useful kick. Query over game time. Does not look out of his depth in AFL.
